China overtakes USA’s economy by 2030?
I put the chance that China overtakes the US in GDP by 2030 at 9%. China can still narrow the gap, but the combination of slower trend growth, property and demographics headwinds, and the strength of the dollar makes a full nominal overtaking by that date unlikely.
Analysis
The key question is almost certainly about nominal GDP in US dollars, not purchasing power parity, and on that basis China faces a difficult hurdle. To overtake the US by 2030, China would need either sustained materially faster real growth than the US, a large and persistent currency appreciation against the dollar, or a sharp US slowdown. None of those looks impossible, but all three together look unlikely given China’s ongoing structural headwinds from aging demographics, weaker productivity growth, soft domestic demand, and persistent property-sector drag. The US still has the advantages of higher trend productivity, immigration-led labor force support, a flexible capital market system, and the reserve-currency status that tends to support nominal scale in dollar terms. Even if China continues to grow faster in real terms, the gap may simply not close quickly enough within the remaining time window.
The strongest argument for a Yes outcome is that China’s economy remains very large and can still post higher real growth than the US if policy stimulus succeeds and external demand holds up. If the renminbi strengthens meaningfully over several years, reported dollar GDP could rise faster than real activity alone would suggest. A period of US recession, high inflation, or major dollar weakness could also compress the gap more quickly than expected. Still, these are conditional tailwinds rather than the baseline case, and the market has only a limited runway until 2030 for them to compound.
The current market price of 18% looks somewhat rich relative to the underlying probability I assign. I would expect some double-digit chance because the market could be anticipating a favorable currency path or a US slowdown, but 18% implies a fairly live outcome rather than a low-probability tail event. My view is that the market is overestimating how much China can still gain in nominal dollar terms before 2030, especially given how much growth has already slowed from earlier decades.
Arguments
For
- China still has room to grow faster than the US in real terms if domestic stabilization efforts work.
- A currency move in China’s favor could materially improve its dollar-denominated GDP ranking.
Against
- China’s structural growth slowdown and demographic deterioration make a rapid catch-up by 2030 unlikely.
- Nominal overtaking requires not just Chinese strength but also an adverse combination of US weakness and currency effects.
Key drivers
- China’s nominal-dollar growth is constrained by slower trend real growth and weaker demographics.
- A strong dollar or continued US productivity and labor-force advantages make overtaking harder by 2030.
Risk factors
- A sharp US recession or prolonged dollar weakness could accelerate China’s relative catch-up in dollar GDP.
- Policy stimulus or a significant renminbi appreciation could boost China’s nominal GDP more than expected.
Scenarios
Best case
China stabilizes growth, the renminbi strengthens, and the US experiences a weak growth or recessionary period, allowing China to briefly edge ahead in nominal GDP by 2030.
Most likely
China continues to narrow the distance in a meaningful but insufficient way, ending 2030 still below the US in nominal GDP.
Worst case
China’s growth continues to slow while the US remains resilient, widening or preserving the gap and making overtaking clearly impossible by 2030.

Starbucks total global stores in 2026
AI64%MKT11%Edge+53Hidden GemStarbucks has a credible path to clear 41,800 global stores by its 2026 reporting date, and I think the market is pricing in too little growth. My independent estimate is a 64% chance of Yes, not 11%.

Will OpenAI or Anthropic IPO first?
AI41%MKT91%Edge-50HypedI think Anthropic is more likely to IPO before OpenAI, so the Yes outcome is only moderately likely. The current market looks too optimistic on OpenAI getting to the finish line first given the newer guidance that OpenAI is likely a 2027 story while Anthropic is being discussed in near-term IPO windows.

Who will Trump pardon?
AI4%MKT50%Edge-46HypedBarron Trump receiving a pardon before 2029 looks very unlikely based on the available information. The main reason is simple: there is no sign he needs one, and a pardon requires an underlying offense or at least a credible legal predicament to resolve.
