2026 Midterms: Congress Balance of Power?
Democrats are favored to control both chambers, but the Senate remains the main bottleneck and keeps this from being a near-certain sweep. My independent estimate is slightly below the market, with a Democratic House/Republican Senate split still the most plausible alternative.
Analysis
The House side of the bet looks very strong for Democrats. Republicans are defending only a razor-thin majority, so even modest national movement, incumbency fatigue, or a normal midterm backlash would likely be enough to flip control. That makes the House outcome comparatively stable and is the main reason the overall yes case is live and not just a coin flip.
The Senate is the real constraint. Democrats need a net gain of four seats while also protecting their own vulnerable incumbents, which is a much steeper path than the House. Even if Democrats are favored in several battlegrounds, the map still leaves plenty of room for one or two underperformances to spoil a sweep, and Senate races are more sensitive to candidate quality, state partisanship, and late-cycle campaign errors.
Relative to the market, I think the sweep is priced a bit rich. A 61% sweep implies the Senate piece is close to even-money conditional on a Democratic House, but the structural difficulty of converting a House-favorable environment into four Senate gains is substantial. The market may be overweighting the momentum of Democratic polling and underweighting the higher variance of individual Senate contests, which is why I would shade toward the alternative of a Democratic House with a Republican Senate.
Arguments
For
- Arguments for Yes: Democrats only need a small House gain to secure control, and current polling and market data strongly favor that outcome.
- Arguments for Yes: Several Senate battlegrounds are competitive enough that a favorable national environment could plausibly deliver the four-seat net pickup Democrats need.
Against
- Arguments against Yes: The Senate path is materially harder than the House path, so a split Congress remains a very live outcome even if Democrats run well.
- Arguments against Yes: Recent analysis still points to divided government as the modal outcome because one or two Senate races can easily fail to break Democratic way.
Key drivers
- The House map is structurally favorable to Democrats because Republicans hold only a very narrow majority.
- The Senate requires a much larger net swing, and several battlegrounds must break Democratic way simultaneously.
Risk factors
- Late polling shifts or candidate-specific weaknesses in one or two Senate races could block a Democratic sweep.
- Resolution risk remains because recounts, vacancies, or delayed certifications could affect control by February 2027.
Scenarios
Best case
Democrats win enough close House races and sweep most Senate battlegrounds, finishing with a narrow but real majority in both chambers by February 2027.
Most likely
Democrats take the House, but the Senate proves slightly too difficult, resulting in a Democratic House and Republican Senate.
Worst case
Democrats capture the House but fall short in the Senate, leaving Republicans in control there and producing divided government.
Outcomes

| D-House, R-Senate | 37% | 30% |
| Republicans sweep | 8% | 9% |

AI28%MKT80%Edge-52HypedLindsay Clancy has a meaningful short-term search spike because of the trial, but a year-end Top 5 finish in Google’s U.S. People list would require sustained national attention that is uncommon for a single criminal case. I think the market is pricing in too much staying power, so I գնահատ the chance of Yes well below the current implied probability.

AI62%MKT19%Edge+43Hidden GemI think Street Fighter is more likely than not to finish below $25 million, but only by a modest margin. The market is pricing a fairly strong underperformance, and that looks directionally right, though the broad tracking range still leaves meaningful upside risk to a small over-$25 million debut.
